Which Yoga Class Is Right for You?

It's time to debunk a myth! This is actually my yoga instructor pet peeve. This gets under my skin and makes me want to scream. Of course, instead of screaming, I sit peacefully and smile because...you know...yoga instructor. Are you ready? Here it is:

People try one yoga class. They don't enjoy it. They decide that the entire world of yoga just isn't for them. They never take another yoga class again.

Ohhh. Just typing that makes me feel sad. Please, allow me to explain.

The word "yoga" encompasses many many many activities. It is not just one type of class. Thinking about physical yoga, there are a myriad of styles that are incredibly different from each other. They also have varying purposes. For example, if you want to eliminate chronic muscular tension, an active Ashtanga class might be fun but it won't accomplish this goal. You would walk away from that class thinking yoga is insane!

I myself have something like 8 different certifications. This means I am able to teach a yoga class in at least 8 different ways and usually I combine several different styles into each class. I currently teach five yoga classes a week, and four of them have completely different styles and purposes for the mind and body.

The bottom line is this: If you don't particularly care for one yoga class, please do not give up on yoga! Try another class. Ideally, speak with a yoga instructor who can listen to your goals and help to match you with a class style.

Here's a breakdown of my current classes! Which class is your best match?

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a very traditional style of yoga. It follows the same sequence in every class. This allows you the opportunity to learn about and to go deeper into poses. It is known as being a vigorous practice. This class will build strength and endurance while also stretching the body and mind. Ashtanga can be modified to any skill level and I offer a variety of options during each class. There are quick-paced vinyasas; however, these can be opted out of or modified as needed. Nothing is required. As long as you feel comfortable making your own decisions and looking different from your neighbors, Ashtanga is a great practice. I am always happy to meet with any person individually to explain how to modify the practice for their goals.

Bottom Line: Quicker Pace. Focus on strength and endurance. Modifiable to any skill level.

When: Mondays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. / YMCA McLeod

Evening Flow

I teach the Evening Flow class in the style of Vin/Yin. This means that the first 30 minutes are a vinyasa style. We will find active movements and connect with the breath. For the second 30 minutes, we will use hold yin poses for a few minutes at a time. This releases tension from the body and mind. Overall, this class provides the opportunity for hard work but also deep relaxation. You will leave this class feeling light and calm, and you will probably sleep wonderfully. As always, I offer modifications for any who need them. As long as you let me know what you need, I can provide those recommendations.

Bottom Line: Work Hard. Rest Hard. Sleep well.

When: Mondays at 6 p.m. / Holiday Park Community Center (free class!)

Slow Flow

The Slow Flow takes a regular vinyasa class and slows it down a bit. We focus on mindful movements in which we have the time to pay attention to alignment and to intentionally connect with the breath. This class is like a moving meditation. It is great for those who need to release stress from the body and mind. It is also great for individuals who do not enjoy fast-paced, intense vinyasa. There are less wrist-based movements, so this class can be helpful for those who experience pain in the wrists. I also recommend this class for anyone who is looking to expand their meditation practice. Slowing down does not mean we work less; it means we have the space to be more mindful. We often cover yogic philosophy during this class and practice breathing techniques.

Bottom Line: Slower movements. Greater awareness. Release tension intentionally. Easily modified for all levels.

When: Tuesdays at 5 p.m. / YMCA McLeod

Deep Stretch Yoga

Ohhh, Deep Stretch Yoga. How do I love thee? In all ways! This is the class that every single human being needs. We continually collect tension in our bodies. Over time, the same tension turns into chronic tension. This class works to release all types of tension. We start with some slow mindful movements and then we shift into longer held poses. Sprinkled in are gentle somatic poses whose purpose is to reprogram the brain in order to release chronic tension. This class is very meditative. We often discuss mindfulness topics and practice breathing techniques. By the end of the class, the parasympathetic nervous system is leading the way and you will leave floating on a cloud. Regardless of any other yoga classes you take, you also need this one!

Bottom Line: Reset the nervous system. Release tension. Breathe.

When: Thursdays at 5 p.m. / YMCA McLeod
